Doggie Poo Projects
Posted by Rainbow Bob on 8/9/2010 to Doogie Poo

Its No Secrets One Of the reasons I started this venture besides my Daughters Input was the disposal of Dog poo waste.  Since April I have been composting all the dog waste Obi and Anakin can make.  They don’t seem to be shy about supplying it either.  I started out with a 10 yr. Old worm factory I got from the county.  The Process started out slowly as expected, to my surprise the smell was minimal and the worms didn’t seem to mind the food source.  I’m estimating about 20 lbs. a month so far. Every once in a while I would check in on my wiggly helpers, they seem to be very fat.  Most dog food is mostly grain and they helped fatten them up quickly, any time I would mention this I would get (Ick, Gross, and your Nuts)  Am I really ? Waste management wants us to toss the Dog waste in the trash can then they dispose in Land fills, were the possibly pathogens seep in to our water supply.  I figure why not compost dog poo and save the water supply and create a viable fertilizer for our lawn and Flowers. (Never use Vermi Compost from Dogs on vegetable Gardens).  This week I picked it up a notch the Worm Factory  was doing great but My Jedi were insistent on trying to create more then  the worm factory could hold.

So I Picked up a Half wine barrel curtsey of Hollow Oak and transferred what I had in the plastic bin, wood is really much better for the worms any way, now let’s see how much they can compost.

Tell me what you think

I started a poo bin with a 360 about 4 months ago. I have had great success but the process is messy since I don't want to cross contaminate the other bin I have with the poo waste. I wear latex gloves when handling the compost. There is, not surprisingly, no smell once the poo has been in the bin for about a week. The worms are happy. My husband is not, for reasons stemming from the poo issue. But as a project I'd say it is successful. I have 1 dog and the one bin is just enough to han
