Description
Mealworms

Are typically used as a food source for reptile, fish, and avian pets. They are also provided to wild birds in bird feeders, particularly during the nesting season, when birds are raising their young and appreciate a ready food supply. Mealworms are high in protein, which makes them especially useful as a food source. They are also commonly used for fishing bait.

Mealworms are the larvae of mealworm beetles.  Tenebrio molitor, as they are technically known, are a species of the darkling beetle.  They have a very high amount of protein and are very palatable to birds.  Our beetle's are on a strict diet of fresh cereal and vegetables, so they are a safe food source for your bluebirds and other birds as well.
FAQ
How to Care for Your Mealworms

If you plan to use all of your mealworms within a couple of weeks, you can either store them in the refrigerator or in a cool part of your home. If you plan to refrigerate mealworms, we suggest that you do so in a container with no substrate for ease of collecting them for feeding. You should take them out of the refrigerator at least once a week and allow the mealworms to get warm and feed them as noted below. If you plan to keep your mealworms unrefrigerated, they should be kept in a bedding material. You can use uncooked oatmeal (the "old fashioned" kind, not instant). For moisture, provide the mealworms with a small amount of apple, carrot, melon, etc. Remember, that with this, more definitely is not better! A quarter of an apple or an equivalent is sufficient for 1,000 mealworms. Lids are optional on mealworm bins as they can not climb the plastic and need the air circulation that an uncovered container allows.
Feature 8
Mealworms Care:

Keep mealworms dry and cool. Avoid sunlight. Keep mealworms refrigerated at 40 to 50 degrees. Avoid freezing them. Every 5 to 7 days remove them from the refrigerator and allow them to warm up and start moving around. Then feed them a few small apple, potato or banana pieces and leave them out for another hour or two. After that, remove the old apple, potato or banana and refrigerate the mealworms again. It is very important that you remove any apple, potato or banana before you refrigerate the mealworms so they don't get moldy. If mealworms are not kept refrigerated, within a few days they will transform into white pupae and then later into black beetles.

Customer Reviews
Rating Melaworms packaging issue
The worms were good sized and very healthy, but the packaging was somewhat flimsy and was damaged in shipping, causing our poor mail carrier to have escaping worms in her mail van! Not only was the delivery delayed because of this, we lost some of the worms. Please consider reinforced packaging for shipping. Your prices are so good that paying a little more for shipping would not be an issue.
