The Advantages of the GeoPlanter

GeoPlanters keep gardeners true to their roots by helping them grow strong, vigorous plants even in harsh climates.

Air Root Pruning

The primary advantage of the GeoPlanter is its air pruning capability, which results in healthier roots being able to provide more nutrients to the plant.   With traditional plastic pots and wooden planters, the plants roots will reach the edge of the container and be force to circle the container in search of a friendlier environment. As these roots circle, minimal lateral branching will occur resulting in poor nutrient uptake and the roots to quickly become root bound.

What makes the GeoPlanter so unique is when the plant roots reach the containers edge its root tips are trapped by the porous fabric and these root tips meet the air on the outside of the pot, causing them to be naturally pruned.  This pruning process forces lateral branching of desired fibrous feeder roots.  These fibrous roots are more productive in the uptake of water and nutrient, resulting in a more vigorous and healthy plant that utilizes the entire root zone for optimum plant growth.

Healthy Fibrous Root/Root Bound

Aeration

GeoPlanter porous fabric allows air to enter the root zone from all surfaces of the container.  This aeration provides a healthy environment for the roots as well as supports beneficial microbe and bacteria.   This aeration provides oxygen to the roots, which is essential for the metabolic process for the roots to take up mineral and nutrients.  Oxygen is also necessary to diffuse carbon dioxide away from the roots caused by the respiration of root cells and microorganisms.   Roots without adequate access to oxygen will result in weaker plants that exhibit slow growth and are predisposed to pests and diseases.

Drainage

A common problem with traditional plastic containers is poor drainage leading to anaerobic condition that result in soil borne diseases like Phytophthora and Pythium, responsible for devastating root rot.  Because of GeoPlanter unique porous fabric, excess water can easily drain from the container keeping moisture at an ideal level for healthy plant growth.

Container Temperature Control

GeoPlanter allows air to penetrate the sides of the container, keeping it cool when exposed to direct sun on hot summer days through the process of evaporative cooling.  According to a study done by Catherine A. Neal at the University of New Hampshire, Dept. of Plant Biology:
In comparison to standard black plastic nursery pots, above ground fabric containers reduce maximum root zone temperatures through evaporative cooling and reduced absorption of solar radiation. Plants grown in fabric containers also have improved root structure as a result of air root pruning.

Pocket planting

GeoPlanter allows gardener to maximize their garden space through pocket planting.  The sides of the GeoPlanter can be planted with plants that like to hang, such as strawberries, ivy, herbs, and dwarf flowers.  Using a razor blade, make a 3-5 horizontal slit in the fabric wall of the planter below the soil level.  Loosen the soil inside, then gently insert the roots directly into the pocket, or plant them first in a 2 or 4 net pots.

Options for GeoPlanter

No matter where you live, GeoPlanters can help your garden to grow and flourish.  Whether you are growing a small garden in the back patio of your apartment or you are filling a 100 thousand square foot commercial greenhouse, GeoPlanter has the perfect container to fit your gardening needs.

GeoPlanter is available in both black and tan colors.  For the traditional raised bed gardeners, we have our PVC framed GeoPlanters. Our planters come in several sizes for a variety of gardening needs. The PVC pipe frame aids in keeping the planters rectangle shape and provides a convenient base for building a plant support trellis or cold frame above the planter. Easy set up that takes only minutes.  GeoPlanter is a convenient and cost effective way to have a great garden.

GeoPlanter self supporting pots also come with an option to add convenient handles!  We have just recently launched our GeoPot Transplanter that has a Velcro seam down the side. This allows the side of the container to open for easy removal of the root ball when transplanting, which makes transplanting an ease while reducing transplanting plant shock.
